… well the first of the losers at any rate. ![]()
I apologise in advance for the brag post, but I felt the need to share some of what we got up to over the weekend.
The comp
With 12 teams in the running—LanSmash’s largest TF2 tournament to date—the SNAP 3v3 team were in for a challenge. Fumbles (Heavy), Shmitee (Medic) and Nakor/Tofu (Tag-teaming on Demoman) were out of practice and largely unfamiliar with arena mode and competitive play in general.
The team entered for a laugh, at best.
Rules of engagement
Arena mode, 3v3 teams, limit of one of each class, first team to 6 points wins the round.
Blow by blow
- In round 1, SNAP initially went down 3 points to 1, but managed to pull it back for a 6/5 victory.
- In the second round, the opponent scratched, so SNAP took an undeserved 6/0. Under the swiss format, this ‘big win’ meant the team would now face the toughest opponents.
- Round 3 saw the team again take an early beating, down 4 to 1, yet the Heavy/Medic combo worked hard to pull the score back to 5/5, and in match point, Demoman cliched the victory. (Video for this match embedded below)
- In the fourth round, SNAP suffered a crushing defeat 6/1 to the top seed ShadySux who would advance straight to the final match against the second ranked team.
- Tied for equal second with Failtrain, SNAP had to compete to determine which of them would enter the final. Again, the opponent gained the upper hand early on, and again SNAP were able to claw their way back to s****h win from the jaws of fail, final score 6/5.
- This meant that the FINAL became a rematch of SNAP vs ShadySux. Luckily the map Nucleus favoured SNAP’s close quarters style with ample opportunity for Fumbles’ signature ‘Drop Heavy’ attack. SNAP were even able to pull ahead to a 5/3 lead. Unfortunately, ShadySux were quick to adapt, turn the tables and take the win.
I’ve learned something today…
Firstly, frag_spawn and Rammy are great strategists. Their counsel was much appreciated and helped the team prep for coming rounds.
Also, TF2 is still a great game! And, competitive play is fun, who knew?
I’m definitely keen to feel the rush again, and if anyone else is interested, I think we should look for opportunities for scrimmage! (TF2 or even BCBF2). Who’s with me?
