Starcraft, 1 Pro vs 3 Noobs

Posted by tofu on September 11th, 2010 @ 09:57In StarCraft, each valiant Terran marine is prepared for battle to a soundtrack of hissing pneumatic wrenches and the mechanical whirring of robotic assistant’s servos moving in concert to position state of the art armoured plating and deadly componentry. All underscored by the loin-stirring strains of a 90 piece orchestra plus chorus — 50 members strong — hiding off-camera…
Really Tired Snappers
Posted by tofu on January 2nd, 2010 @ 13:45Well, Auld Lan Syne was a lot of fun. The sleeper hit (imo) was a resurgence of RTS gaming in the form of Command and Conquer 3.
Fumbles’ (now famous) five-minute-custom-maps provided exciting gameplay through new challenges and unique opportunities:
- Map 2 (which I have dubbed “Guerrilla War Fair”) forces players to fight cat and mouse for scarce resources (discouraging turtling).
- Map 5 “Fields of Death” provides one main centralised field of Tiberium, then denied players the ability to build Refineries nearby. This results in most action focused around the Tiberium fields with opportunities to harass less well defended bases.
- Map 6 “Epic Turtle Armageddon” gives each player a quarter of the map and near limitless resources, they can amass vast armies before unleashing them on each other in epic waves (these brought my i7 rig shuddering to it’s knees).
The maps are available for download from the Members Only section for beta testing. But Fumbles might release them publicly in future.
I know many of us already own CnC3, but if you don’t and you’re interested in a bit of RTS action in coming weeks, pick it up and let us know.
If you’re interested in further map testing, patch up to version 1.09, then download Fumbles’ maps, and install them (as per instructions).
Hope to see you online for a bash!
There is only war
Posted by tofu on July 5th, 2009 @ 19:19I have to say, the gameplay footage for the new DoW patch looks very cool.
There’s only one problem… I’m pretty close to a complete RTS n00b. The strategy and complexity in this game are what really appeals to me, but I’m not sure I can invest the time required to feel comfortable playing in this genre.
What do we think? Is it possible to make the jump to RTS? Or should we stay focussed on FPS and MMOs?

Watch this video…
Posted by tofu on September 24th, 2008 @ 21:24Watch this video and learn from it.
I generally liken the experience of playing RTS single-player campaigns to that of watching reruns of Two and Half Men with the sound turned way down while 3 different talk-back radio stations are running simultaneously behind you… in other words, entirely pointless! But hearing George Takei’s rendition of “all your base are belong to us“
makes me think I’ll suffer through RA3 just to watch the hilarious FMV cut scenes.
